Description
Demolition of a 4 arched masonry bridge

The works required installing and removing track protection to 4 No lines with a total area of over 500m2. Demolition of all 4 arches simultaneously with 30T, 360 excavators. Clearing arisings using 30T articulated dumpers and reducing 2 No piers to 600mm below track level. Completed in 30hrs within a 52hr blockade.

Description
Demolition of single arch of a 9 arched bridge

The works required installing an access road over the track from the compound up to the bridge. As only 1 arch was demolished, temporary works were installed beneath the span with vibration monitors to ensure the stability of the remaining 8 spans. Methodical demolition of the arch was carried out utilizing a 20m long reach and 25T excavator. All arisings were cleared using 9T forward tipping dumpers. The demolition and clearance was completed within 20hrs within a 52hr blockade enabling the Con-Arches to be installed.

Demolition of the last 4 signal boxes on the Blackpool line

Due to multiple locations and access restriction, different methods where employed for each.
To minimize waste, each box was soft striped prior to demolition to ensure arising were separated into the correct waste / recycling streams. Blackpool Signal Box was then demolished via 25T 360Ëš excavator with rotating selector grab & hydraulic breaker. The works were all undertaken over a 4-week period during a line closure whilst the overhead electrification was completed.

Bridge Removals

As part of numerous works carried out on the project we removed 3 No steel structures over 2 No weekends. The bridges were removed utilizing a large 30T excavator and oxy propane hot cutting methods. Other works on the project include removal of culverts, ground slabs, canopies, wall & redundant brick and timber structures.

Removal of 3 Span Bridge

Removal of brick parapets and road fill prior to main possession.
Installation of 200 No Navi mats during a 29hr possession to enable the 3 span structure to be removed from the p’way via SPMTs, reduction of abutments and lifting of protection. Further processing of the structure continued within the site compound.

Description

The overall scope of works included the removal of platforms 1 - 5 canopies of varying construction from high level walkways, timber and asbestos covering to large cast iron structures. Dismantling of 2No station buildings. Lift out of a high level walkway bridge and associated access stairs consisting of steel and a concrete deck. The major part of the works were carried out in 3hr mid week nights and 3No weekend possessions. Due to the time and access restraints the high level walkway and cast iron sections of canopy were removed as the new steel sections where being erected utilizing 250T and 350T cranes working simultaneously.

Dismantling of various structures over 12 platforms

Removal of the Navigation Street entrance footbridge over a Christmas blockade utilizing a 750T crane

The overall scope of works included, but not limited to:-
  • Dismantling of the TOC building as part of the enabling work.
  • Cutting of openings through the Station Approach road including temporary works to support the remaining roadway enabling the Tower Crane to be installed.
  • Dismantling of Platform Offices, Plant Rooms, Waiting Rooms etc.
  • Forming openings through 1000mm thick concrete floors for lifts, escalators and stairs utilizing robotic excavators.  
  • Removal of Concrete Lift Shafts, Lift Carriages, Motor Rooms, counterweights etc.
  • Removal of Concrete Smoke Parapets to the front of the station.
  • Ground works / foundation removal to platforms 
  • ventilation systems 
  • other structural elements such as stairs, ramps structural walls etc. 
  • Part removing columns utilizing track saws 
On this project we had numerous obstacles to over come from carrying out the majority of the works whilst the station was operational, restricted weight loading to the platforms resulting in works being carried out by hand or small robotic excavators and restricted access with materials having to be placed into 1000's of bulk bags which were either loaded onto trains for removal or lifted up through the station.

Removal of 9 No. bridge structures

The scope of the works was the removal of 9No bridges over 3 consecutive weekends. The structures consisted of various types of construction: Flat steel deck, troughed, brick jack arched, concrete deck etc. The removal involved the use of cranes ranging from 120T to 1200T.
